Hilary, a mumma of two and a family dentist, knew that the current model of teaching kids to brush their teeth and doing it right clearly wasn’t working. She would constantly see children with serious dental problems file through her clinic.
She hated seeing parents feel like they had failed and children beginning their dental health journey in a negative way.
“I’m a family dentist! I knew that if I couldn’t get it right with my own kids, something was very wrong with the traditional approach.” After battling her youngest, she watched in awe one day as he happily chomped away on finger puppets.

Together with her good friend Colleen, a family psychologist and inspirational mum of three, they set about to turn the children's dental industry upside down. Hilary's experience and knowledge as a dentist covered the practical side of what was needed to keep teeth clean and healthy from a young age.
Colleen, a clinical psychologist and guest lecturer, drew on her extensive child development expertise and the playful approach she uses at home with her three children. Colleen shaped the theory and personality of the Brushies to help parents get their silly on at just the right time in a child’s life.
“Parenting is about bonding, patience, examining your own approach, and a willingness to meet your child where they are. It’s really all about developing trust and creating consistent habits through play.”
Together they created the world's first finger-puppet toothbrush - The Brushie.
